Sometimes, the most meaningful change begins with a simple conversation under a tree, in a community center, or wherever women gather to learn from one another.
Across refugee host communities in Binduri, Bawku West and Nabdam District of the Upper East Region of Ghana, expectant mothers are coming together through community-based pregnancy school sessions, not only to prepare for childbirth but also to build friendships, confidence, and hope for the future.
For many participants, these sessions provide practical guidance on antenatal care, nutrition, recognizing danger signs during pregnancy, and preparing for safe delivery. More importantly, they offer women the opportunity to ask questions, share personal experiences, and receive support early in their pregnancy journey, complementing the work of the Mother-to-Mother Support Groups.
One of the most inspiring aspects of these pregnancy schools is the relationships they foster. Refugee women and women from host communities learn side by side, exchange experiences, and discover that despite their different backgrounds, they share the same dreams of healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries. Through these shared moments, the sessions are quietly strengthening social cohesion, promoting understanding, and building trust within communities.
With funding support from Kindermissionswerk Die Sternsinger of Germany, NABOCADO, through the Collaborative Child Health Initiative for Life-Saving and Development (CHILD) Project, has so far reached 435 pregnant women, with 120 healthy births already recorded. Every session reminds us that investing in mothers is also an investment in healthier children, stronger families, and more peaceful communities.
