INPEACE holds fora with Houses of Chiefs on Chieftaincy Act and succession planning

November 23, 2023  ·  Justice, Peace & Humanitarian Response

Chieftaincy and traditional leadership have proven to be the most critical and resilient institution in Ghana’s democracy, but recent developments appear to jeopardise the value of chiefs, as the absence of well-documented and widely recognised succession plans has resulted in major chieftaincy conflicts in many areas.

The Good Governance, Justice and Peace Directorate of NABOCADO, through the Integrated Peacebuilding for Improved Food and Nutrition Support (INPEACE) project funded by Misereor, has held stakeholder fora on the Chieftaincy Act and succession planning for the North East and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs.

The engagements, which follow similar activities at community level, aim to increase traditional rulers’ awareness of the Chieftaincy Act of Ghana and facilitate the development of sustainable succession plans to be adopted by the various traditional governments.

We are grateful to the National Peace Council, Ghana and the Regional Houses of Chiefs for their cooperation.
