Datuku Farmers Use Community Rain Gauge Data to Plan the Farming Season

May 09, 2025  ·  Livelihood & Agriculture

Smallholder farmers often have limited access to weather information, which hinders their ability to make informed decisions about their farming activities. This leads to poor crop performance, which affects their yields and contributes to food insecurity.

To address this challenge, NABOCADO, through the SCRAS Project funded by MISEREOR of Germany, facilitated communities to develop Community Climate Change Adaptation Action Plans (CAAPs), which guide the communities to implement activities that enhance their adaptive capacity and mitigation efforts to reduce the effect of climate change on their livelihoods.

As part of the implementation of the CAAPs, communities installed rain gauges to monitor the frequency, quantity and trends of rainfall within their respective communities.

As the rainy season approaches, smallholder farmers from Datuku in the Talensi District met to share rainfall information on the previous season and plan their farming activities for the upcoming season based on the available data. The farmers are excited that through this initiative they have access to information that will help them plan their activities and adapt to the effects of a changing climate, ultimately building their resilience.

Together, we are fostering a community of informed farmers ready to face the challenges posed by climate change.
